Smaller Government & Lower Taxes
Raising the Senior Exemption
Canton is Worth Caring About, I Will Be Your Voice
ENDORSEMENT: Todd Smith – Candidate for Ward 3, Canton City Council
I am pleased to endorse Todd Smith as he seeks to earn your vote to serve on Canton’s 7-member City Council. A reminder to all voters, but especially newcomers – Canton has three wards with two members in each plus the Mayor. Residents vote for all three ward candidates, but candidates must live in the ward they represent. In addition, council positions are non-partisan, so any political party affiliation is not a factor. Term is four years.
A few residents met recently with Todd to discuss his candidacy – qualifications, expectations, background, motivation, etc. As a result, I am confident that Todd will serve you well – ethically, with purpose and full commitment. His professional experience will be very relevant to guiding the City’s future, especially related to fiscal acuity, corporate management, large project leadership, financial analysis, budgeting and control.
You will find Todd to be thoughtful, somewhat reserved, comfortably conservative, well informed, and highly motivated.
In sum, I strongly encourage registered voters to please vote for TODD SMITH, Ward 3.
Respectfully submitted,
L.B. (“Buzz”) Ahrens, former Chairman of the Cherokee Board of Commissioners, Jan 2007-Dec 2018”
Identify Waste
Wasteful spending robs taxpayers. With my financial background, I will conduct line-by-line reviews, eliminating unnecessary costs and redirecting funds toward projects that provide measurable benefits to residents.
Promote Merit
City government should stick to serving residents, not political fads. I will focus on practical solutions—safety, affordability, efficiency—while removing divisive and wasteful programs that don’t improve lives.
Policy & Positions
Increase Senior Exemption
Our senior exemption has not been keeping up with inflation or raised at all. Seniors deserve better, and deserve financial peace of mind. I will work to maintain—and when responsible, expand—the senior exemption so retirees can stay in their homes without rising tax burdens. No senior should lose their home to aggressive assessment tactics or rate increases.
Create Higher Paying Jobs
Canton needs good jobs that support families. By encouraging business growth, streamlining permitting, and investing in workforce partnerships, we can attract employers and create higher-wage opportunities locally. If more intelligent investments are made in responsible development, we will make Canton the economic engine of the Outer-Perimeter.
Reduce City Budget
Budgets must reflect priorities. I’ll apply common sense budgeting to focus spending on safety, infrastructure, and services that matter, cutting out fluff and excess bureaucracy.
Reduce Deficit & Taxes
Government should serve people, not the other way around. I will push for leaner operations, ensuring essential services remain while keeping taxes low and predictable for all families.

I’m not a career politician—just your neighbor. I believe in listening, working together, and keeping our city safe, affordable, and welcoming.
